Cookies for a Cause: SMES 5th Graders Raise Money for Georgia’s Coastal Environment

The annual 5th-grade Cookie Company service project raised almost $1,000 dollars for the University of Georgia’s (UGA) Marine Extension Service on Skidaway Island. The proceeds were raised at the annual school-wide cookie sale put on by the 5th-grade class.
At the start of the project, 5th-grade students were divided into groups, or “Cookie Companies,” and each “employee” adopted a leadership role within the company such as CEO or CFO. Each team created a cookie they believed would turn a profit at the school-wide sale. The inventions ranged from Wookie Cookies to Rainbowlicious Cookies.

Throughout the project employees learned about product design, marketing strategies, sales and more. They produced “TV” commercials that were shown on Warrior TV, designed signs that were placed strategically throughout the school, and wrote “radio” commercials that they performed over morning announcements.

Students mixed and baked their cookies with the help of parent volunteers. The morning of the big sale, each company set up a booth to display their cookies in the Middle School Atrium.

Grade levels visited the cookie sale one at a time. When a new batch of customers entered the Atrium they were met with a flurry of activity as the companies vyed for their attention. Some booths incorporated bright decorations, some salespeople wore costumes in line with their cookie’s brand, and one company even “hired” a sign spinner.

The CFO from each company will deposit the proceeds at Fidelity Bank under the supervision St. Martin’s Episcopal School (SMES) CFO John Cunningham. SMES 5th graders will deliver a check in person to the UGA Marine Extension Service on Skidaway Island during their first overnight field trip in April.
