A Record Year for the Middle School Geography Bee

St. Martin’s kicked off the new year with the annual Middle School Geography Bee. Congratulations to first place winner Peter van der Mandele (8th grade), and runners-up Drew Park (6th grade) and Christopher Kartsonas (7th grade).
“Peter did not miss a single question,” said event moderator and Director of High School Placement Neil Conrad. “All of the finalists answered more questions correctly than in previous years, possibly even in SMES history.”

Contestants were selected from each middle school social studies class based on their performance in a classroom geography competition. The 12 Geography Bee participants were Candler Neel (6th), Drew Park (6th), Joao Romano (6th), Ingrid van der Mandele (6th), Brayden Ebert (7th), Carter Hathaway (7th), Christopher Kartsonas (7th), Alex Tracht (7th), Henry Hildreth (8th), Sophia Karampelas (8th), Emma Schwind (8th), and Peter van der Mandele (8th).

SMES 4th-8th grade students cheered quietly from the stands as their peers navigated questions about continents, countries, capitals and more while Middle School social studies teachers Jennie Paulsen, Alexis Leifermann and Courtney Riley kept score.
