The Kairos Learning Center at St. Martin's

St. Martin’s Episcopal School offers a unique learning environment for students who have diagnosed language-based learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. “Kairos,” in ancient Greek, refers to the right, critical or opportune moment in time.

At St. Martin’s, we honor this idea by offering a unique “school within a school” program, allowing identified students to receive the additional support they need to succeed balanced with immersion in the educational experience, co-curricular classes and overall culture offered at St. Martin’s Episcopal School. The Kairos Learning Center (KLC) offers Orton-Gillingham-based expert instructional support and small student-teacher ratios for bright students who have an identified language-based learning difference.

Admission Process

Kairos for 1st - 4th Grade

The foundation of the Kairos Learning Center begins in the Lower School. Teachers utilize auditory/visual/ tactile/kinesthetic methods based on the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach, where they address all language areas, including phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and automaticity, writing, spelling, grammar, morphology and reading comprehension. A current psychoeducational evaluation with a dyslexia diagnosis is required.

Daily schedule includes:

90 minutes of Orton-Gillingham remediation in small-group language arts classes
50-60 minutes of multi-sensory math instruction in small group classes
30 minutes of speech-language services to improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills through push-in sessions

Language Arts (small group) 90 minutes

Kairos for 5th and 6th Grade

The Middle School program for 5th and 6th graders offers support for students with an identified language- based learning difference, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia. Students receive foundational skills in reading, writing, and spelling through multi-sensory, structured, and sequential methods. A current psychoeducational evaluation with a dyslexia diagnosis is required.

Daily schedule includes:

English instruction in a small group setting led by an Orton-Gillingham trained Kairos instructor
Study Skills course in lieu of foreign language

Study Skills for Middle School (5th-8th)

The Study Skills program is designed to enhance students’ executive functioning and study skills while providing learning support in the core subjects (English, social studies, math, and science) by teaching crucial strategies for organization, study habits, and test-taking. The Study Skills program serves students at each grade level in the division by refining the skills necessary for academic independence and success as they move through Middle School. Students take Study Skills in lieu of foreign language. A current psychological evaluation with dyslexia diagnosis is NOT required.
