Going green
SMES continues green efforts
St. Martin's has two "green" initiatives under way this month. Make note of the new "No Idling: Young Lungs at Work" signs posted in the carpool areas. The No Idling Zone is part of the school's involvement with the Clean Air Schools program, in partnership with the Clean Air Campaign.
The school is working to protect the health of our students, our staff and the environment. Please show your support by turning off your engine while waiting in morning or afternoon carpool lines. You will not only improve our air, you'll also save money in fuel and vehicle wear and tear.
The emissions that come from car tailpipes harm everyone, especially children who breathe more and at a faster rate than adults. In fact, children breathe 50 percent more air per pound of body weight than adults. Georgia also has a higher than average rate of pediatric asthma. Asthma attacks can be triggered by exposure to car exhaust.
If you are sitting still for more than 30 seconds, you are idling. Thank you for turning off YOUR engine!
St. Martin's also is participating in the Green Cup Challenge this month, along with many other Atlanta independent schools. Between now and Feb. 21, SMES will aim to decrease energy use by at least 7 percent. The school that shows the highest reduction of energy use wins the challenge.
The practices to be implemented at school can be used at home as well:
1) Use as much natural light as possible. If not possible, try using half of your lighting system or less if feasible.
2) Make sure you unplug or turn off all electronics that are not being used. If charging cell phones, make sure you unplug after it is completely charged.
3) Keep your thermostat set at 68 degrees, or whatever is comfortable. Make sure your door is closed while in and out of the classroom, so that the heat does not escape into the hallways.
4) Turn off all lights while not in classroom or office.
Students in the Green Club will be making the rounds on campus to offer friendly reminders and tips for reducing energy consumption.
Thank you for your support of our Green efforts at St. Martin's.

Relief for Haiti
St. Martin’s is delighted to announce that the SMES community contributed $8,678 to relief for Haiti! Thank you to all of the students, parents, faculty and administrators who donated cash and checks to Episcopal Relief and Development.
Please continue to pray for earthquake victims in Haiti, as well as the relief workers from around the world who are lending their time and efforts to help those in need. The Episcopal Church has a strong presence in Haiti and will continue to support the nation for many years to come.
