SMES Night with Atlanta Dream
The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream has invited St. Martin’s School to be special guests at their game vs. the L.A. Sparks on Sunday, August 23 at 3 pm. The team is providing 20 free tickets, and additional tickets at only $15 each. The school will award the 20 free tickets (first come, first serve) to rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders who will be enrolled at SMES in the 2009-2010 school year, and provide bus transportation and faculty chaperones to those students for the event. Tickets are still available!
Any other interested students or families may purchase the $15 tickets to sit in the SMES section but will need to provide their own transportation and chaperones. Let’s get behind the Dream and show our SMES spirit! Contact Keisha Noel to get tickets at knoel@stmartinschool.org
Spring Musical
St. Martin's is delighted to announce that the 2010 spring musical will be the American musical theatre classic, "Bye Bye Birdie."
Bye Bye Birdie is a satire of American society. Set in 1959, it tells the story of a rock and roll singer, Conrad Birdie, who is being inducted into the Army at the height of his popularity. Elvis Presley, and his draft notice in 1957, inspired the story.
The Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie opened on April 14, 1960. The abridged, St. Martin’s production, will open exactly 50 years after the original premiere, tying the musical with the 50th anniversary celebration of St. Martin’s Episcopal School.
Songs from the show include An English Teacher, What Did I Ever See in Him?, Put on a Happy Face, One Boy, A Lot of Livin' to Do, Kids, Rosie and Spanish Rose.
Bye Bye Birdie won four Tony Awards for Musical, Director, Choreography and Supporting or Featured Actor as well as The Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.

7th graders complete Cornell bird study
St. Martin's 7th grade science classes recently concluded a four-month bird study on campus. This was the 8th annual study affiliated with the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology, organized by science teacher Susan Potenza.
Students positively identified 28 species of birds at or near feeders during the months of January, February, March and April. The data will be sent to the university's lab to become part of their international bird study.
The birds noted in the study included the Mourning Dove (pictured here, the most consistent visitor), the Red-Bellied Woodpecker, the Pine Warbler, the American Goldfinch, the Northern Mockingbird (a bully!), the Carolina Chickadee, the Cedar Waxwing (39 flocked to the water source one day!) and the Brown Thrasher (the state bird of Georgia).

Festival Day
St. Martin's celebrates the Saints
Click here for a slideshow of photos from Festival Day.
The school community enjoyed a fantastic, fun-filled Festival Day on Friday, May 2. With a theme of "Celebrate the Saints," the event was the culmination of a year-long study highlighting different saints.
The morning kicked off with a parade of saints. Each grade level dressed students in costumes and shared facts about the saint they studied. The band played "When the Saints Go Marching In," and students also sang "Seek Ye First."
Entertainment for the day included Gospel singer Eric Moore, who also performed at the Veteran's Day assembly this year. He hosted a sing-a-long for students. Pastor/actor Marty Barrett entertained students with show-and-tell and impersonations about the saints. Middle School drama students performed a puppet play called "The Justice League of Saints" with great moral lessons for students.
Students also enjoyed their time to shop in the outdoor marketplace to purchase crafts and food items with their "halo" dollars, and to play games in the arcade managed by the 8th graders.
This was St. Martin's 16th annual Festival Day celebration. Next year's event will focus on the school's 50th anniversary.
